Opossum trapping and removal is common in residential and rural neighborhoods, schools, businesses and farms. They come down greenbelts or out of culverts and find their way to your yard, attic or crawlspace under your home, shed or patio. Sometimes you will see opossums running along a fence or hiding in a tree.
Opossums have been called big ugly rats by some. I have had people say to me, "Oh, opossums are not so bad to have around my home."
Well, these varmints can rip up lawns, ransack gardens, and rummage through trash just for food. They also make their homes under sheds, in attics, or under homes, tearing up insulation and making a general mess of things. They also carry fleas which if you have pets, are easily transmittable to them, and you!
If an opossum has moved into your attic, or under you home, they are leaving their droppings and urine behind, which will pose health risks. They are likely also tearing apart the insulation to make nesting areas. Opossums transmit diseases to pets and people. They are known to be carriers of leptospirosis, tuberculosis, coccidiosis, spotted fever, tularemia, and other diseases.
A wild animal living in an attic or crawlspace is, in my opinion, "bad to have around". The best way to address an opossum problem is humanely trapping them, exclusion, and removing the opossum from the property.

A customer called me about a very bad smell in their home. After doing a search and recover crawl under the house, I found this smelly rotting maggot infested opossum body directly under their kitchen area. Once removed, the smell went away quickly for the homeowner. I skipped lunch for the day... suddenly not hungry.
A family of Opossums had made their way into the ceiling of a laundry room. After carefully removing ceiling tiles, these Opossums were removed 1 by 1, by hand. They were very calm... much more relaxed than the home owner who heard them in the laundry room ceiling.
