Rats, both 'roof rats' (the most common rat) and Norway rats (a larger brown rat), are common pests in residential and rural neighborhoods, businesses, farms and generally any area that has a food source and can be called home.
A rat is a destructive rodent that can destroy an attic by chewing up insulation, wiring, hoses and even get into duct work which can lead to serious health problems. Rats can carry and spread many diseases in their urine, feces and saliva including trichinosis and salmonellosis. They can also introduce fleas, ticks, and mites (and the diseases that they carry)
Inside a home, rats are typically found in and around kitchens and areas where food is kept. Rats can infest a garage where nesting materials, such as clothes, boxes and papers, as well as food, are easily found. A severe infestation of rats can cause hundreds of dollars in damages as they chew through 'things' looking for food and nesting materials.
The best way to address a rat infestation is a rat trapping program. It is effective and humane. It does not pose a risk to other animals or children since no poison is left which could be found later.
There are some pest control companies that will use poison as a solution. In our opinion, it is not worth the risk of a secondary poisoning incident.
